Wishful Drinking: A Review

Carrie Fisher has always been a funny, thoughtful and kind-hearted woman (to say the least). Fisher's one-woman stage performance Wishful Drinking, an HBO special is, (as you can imagine), quite a story. She describes it in a very funny, light-hearted way and does it extremely well.

“If my life wasn’t funny, it would just be true, and that is completely unacceptable”

I found myself watching this after the sad news of her passing, and if you want to know what to expect without me spoiling it for you, it is somewhere in-between a sad yet funny version of events. She even had to get a blackboard and explain her family tree to see who was related to who and how they knew each other - its worth a watch.

She speaks of her 'normal' upbringing as the child to two famous parents, Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, but Carrie being Carrie, she uses sarcasm to tell us her story. "For those of you who are younger, try to think of it this way: think of Eddie as Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston as Debbie and Angelina Jolie as Elizabeth [Taylor]” she said. As well as listing her mother's marriages, she tells us of the time she was with Paul Simon and later, Bryan Lourd, whom she had a daughter with named Bille Lourd who you may know in Scream Queens.

“ All my friends made fun of me because they said the title of the film sounded like a fight between my parents...'Star Wars' ”

In almost every interview, she is asked if she knew Star Wars was going to be such a big hit. Her reply? "Yes - I knew! We all knew. The only one who didn't know was George Lucas. We kept it from him because we wanted to see what his face looked like when it changed expression". But as Star Wars has an ever growing fan base, you couldn't  really forget the merchandise, could you? A Princess Leia shampoo (which by the way, " you could twist my head and pour liquid out" says Carrie). The merchandise includes a sex doll, Princess Leia Potato Head and a PEZ dispenser which she loves (the PEZ dispenser, not the doll!).

Fisher connected with her audience through her kind -hearted soul by opening up about her struggles. She lived to hear the laughter of others and now that she is not here to hear them, it feels almost empty with her and her mother gone. But, that cannot stop you, nor I from reading her books, listening to her audiobooks and watching her films. She will keep on inspiring millions globally and that is just who she was - an inspiration.
